What is the difference between the properties of monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon?
Monocrystalline silicon:
Excellent electrical properties and high carrier mobility.
Good mechanical properties and high strength.
Uniform optical properties, suitable for high precision optical applications.
Polycrystalline silicon:
Poor electrical properties, grain boundaries affect carrier migration.
Mechanical properties are low, with grain boundaries causing strength loss.
Uneven optical properties with grain boundaries and defects.
Silicon Prism
Silicon is grown by the CZ technique (CZ) and contains some oxygen which creates an absorption band at 9 microns. To avoid this, silicon can be prepared by a floating zone (FZ) process.
Optical silicon is usually lightly doped (5 to 40 ohm cm) for best transmission above 10 microns. Silicon has a further through band of 30 to 100 microns which is only effective in very high resistivity uncompensated materials.
Doping is usually boron (p-type) and phosphorus (n-type).
